HISTORY OF THE HAVANESE

The Havanese is a charming, small toy breed with a rich history that dates back several centuries. Originally from Cuba, the Havanese is believed to be the direct descendant of small dogs brought to the island by Spanish settlers in the 18th century. These dogs were likely bred with other small breeds, including the Italian Bolognese and the Maltese, resulting in the unique and affectionate Havanese we know today.

Named after the city of Havana, the breed quickly became popular among Cuban aristocracy, where it was cherished for its friendly nature, small size, and silky coat. In 1996, the American Kennel Club (AKC) officially recognized the Havanese as a member of the Toy Group, and it has since gained popularity in the United States and around the world.
