About the Breed

History of the Havanese

The Havanese is Cuba's only native dog breed and has a rich history dating back to the 18th century. Descended from small companion dogs brought to Cuba by Spanish settlers, the breed quickly became a favorite among Cuban aristocracy for its affectionate nature, intelligence, and beautiful silky coat. Today, the Havanese is cherished worldwide as a loving family companion.

Allergy-Friendly

The Havanese is often considered a great choice for allergy-

sensitive households.

Their silky coat sheds very little and produces less dander than many other breeds.

While no dog is completely hypoallergenic, regular grooming and bathing can help minimize allergens and keep your home comfortable.

Size & Life Expectancy

The Havanese is a small toy breed, typically standing 8.5 to 11.5 inches tall and weighing between 7 and 13 pounds.

With proper care, they enjoy a long lifespan of approximately 14 to 16 years, providing many years of love and companionship.

Why Choose a Havanese?

Known for their cheerful personalities and devotion to their families, Havanese are affectionate, intelligent, and adaptable companions.

Their small size and friendly nature make them ideal for families, seniors, and apartment living.

With a perfect 10/10 affection rating, Havanese thrive on human companionship and love being involved in daily family life.

Health & Wellness

Havanese are generally healthy, long-lived dogs. Responsible breeders perform recommended health screenings to help reduce the risk of inherited conditions.

At Lloyd's Happy Havanese, health is a top priority, and our breeding dogs undergo appropriate health evaluations whenever applicable.

Recommended Health Testing:
• Patella Evaluation
• Hip Evaluation
• BAER Hearing Test
• Ophthalmologist Eye Evaluation

Grooming

The Havanese long, soft coat requires regular grooming to prevent mats and tangles.

Daily brushing is recommended, and many families choose a shorter "puppy cut" for easier maintenance.

Occasional baths help keep their coat clean, healthy, and beautiful.

Exercise & Activity

Havanese have moderate exercise needs and are happiest spending time with their families.

Daily walks, backyard playtime, and indoor games are usually enough to keep them healthy and content.

Because they form strong bonds with their people, they do best in homes where they receive plenty of companionship and attention.

Training & Temperament

Intelligent and eager to please, Havanese are highly trainable and respond best to positive reinforcement.

Early socialization and gentle training help them develop into confident, well-mannered companions. Their affectionate personalities allow them to get along wonderfully with children, adults, and other friendly pets.

Nutrition

A high-quality diet appropriate for your dog's age and activity level is essential for lifelong health. Because some Havanese can be prone to weight gain, portion control and regular exercise are important for maintaining a healthy body condition.
